The Native American Indian Myth

Rio Bravo is an area in the New Austin territory. One of its most famous landmarks is known as Repentance Rock. It is off to the south of this feature where the finds of a mysterious deer pelt and several artefacts have been discovered. It is believed to be Native American. Contrary to popular belief, the site is unlikely to be a grave as most Native American Indian burials are gathered near a sacred geographical feature, an area of spiritual significance, or an area in relation to their totem. Also, many graves have large mounds of earth with stones placed on top to mark an individuals' grave. Today they are primarily based in cemeteries. There is no evidence of Repentance Rock being sacred to any character in Red Dead Redemption. It is more likely that this area was:

the victim's last place before they died, although the layout of the items are very neat and precise,

the last place the victim was able to leave the items before their death,

the place where a second person may have left the items,

the site of a funerary ritual.

What are the findings?

A deer pelt, a plate and stelae. (Stelae are the equivelent of modern day tomb stones although they can be autobiographies, recorded events, boundary markers or erected for artistic purposes. They are made of stone and can be inscribed or painted).

What is on the deer pelt?

There are images on the deer pelt, which can be viewed here (with credit and thanks to all those who contributed to the page) which show a sun with extended rays pointing down toward a triangular shape, by this second shape there is a circle which contains one dot in each quarter, and an arrow pointing in what would appear North East on the in-game compass. Followed by the arrow is a paw print which is presumably a bear paw print as it differs from the paw print of a wolf which is thinner and longer.

The Plate

The plate appears to begin with a small black figure then a sun with a large number of rays. There is a very square human-like figure, left blank that is larger than the sun. This is followed by a very small scale fully coloured human-like figure which stands by a large spear/ point/ arrow head and what appears to be a bison. Bison originated from the plains of North America where as buffalo originated from Africa, although most American bison are referred to as buffalo.

The Stelae

These stones have several images which are unclear and have not yet been pictured clearly. The images I have are as close as I can photograph them but I have added sketches, too. There are two in total with a design and a third stone left blank, or it is impossible to achieve the correct angle to see it; the most northern stela appears to be a small blacked out figure looking up toward a larger figure which appears to have a beak and may resemble a bird. This could be one of numerous interpretations.

1) The larger figure is a 'shaman'. The small figure may be seeking advice, although there are no hints of shamans during any part of the game.

2) The larger figure is supposed to be the white man, dominating the Native American Indian.

3) It represents some kind of bird of the area - the birds located in the areas included in this canundrum are eagles, crows, hawks and smaller birds like the hummingbird.

The second stela appears to be a 'happy' face looking away from a large square figure, again simply out lined. This is located to the north of the site, directly 'above' the plate.

1) This is because the smaller figure has found ‘redemption’,

2) This is because the Indian has found peace,

3) This is simply an invention of R*

The Sites.

The 'Mysterious Site' in Rio Bravo, Mescalero in Hennigan's Stead and Bear Claw Camp in Tall Trees

My conclusion....

The deer pelt: The pelt begins with a sun which has a small arrow pointing downwards. The sun may be a symbolic setting sun, the sun has set over Mescalero or it may be directly pointing to this site or it may be a simple arrow to tell the reader to look down, rather than right to the paw print. It points to the triangular shape. Many people suspect this may be a symbol for a tepee, a temporary home or even an eye. In my opinion it is the small wooden structures which can be found around Mescalero. The third symbol in which people have suspected to be a medicine wheel is in my opinion the symbol for Mescalero. I believe this because the site has a feature central which is a stone circle. The circle has one small row of stones pointing toward the East which is extended. By standing at the tip of the point, the sun will only align from the West. Native American Indian belief states that when the sun sets it is the end of an era or the end of time. Although the stone circle here has 15 sectors so the drawing may refer to North South East West - it may be a location. After this circular figure on the deer pelt, there is an arrow which points to the paw print. On the in-game map, if the character is located at Mescalero, it is possible to see the exact same angle as the arrow on the deer pelt which points to Bear Claw Camp. If this is true, the pelt begins with a location where the Indian began and then ends where they may have died - they may also have some involvement with Dutch van der Linde’s Gang and Nastas.

The Plate and Stelae: The small blacked out figure is a Native American, this is shared by a lot of others, too. The larger square outline figure is the white man. The spear is a symbol of protection. The small bison/buffalo is of the species that roamed the Great Plains. It is possible the large white man cuts off all life as he is symbolically blocking the sun. The stelae depict attempts of asking gods or shamans for guidance. The figure with his back to the white man, looking 'happy' may have found salvation. These stelae may have been erected after death by a fellow Indian. However, there is new evidence which I am currently searching for. This is shown in the pictures.

By using the map, all three sites are linked by direction. All three sites are also on a higher piece of land. The sun is clearly visible in all directions in all areas.

These are my conclusions and the work I have previously read online in forums and from the Red Dead Wiki pages. It is not possible to thank all members for their contribution however, they can contact me through the Red Dead Wiki site via ABC1912 (or PSN) if they have any copyright issues.

I should also point out I study archaeology.
